What Are Carbon Steel Pipes & Tubes?

Carbon steel pipes and tubes are hollow cylindrical products manufactured primarily from carbon and iron, with carbon content typically ranging from 0.06% to 1.5%. The mechanical properties of tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, and toughness vary directly with carbon content and heat treatment, making carbon steel pipe one of the most versatile and widely specified piping materials across global industries.

Commonly referred to as CS pipe or CS tube in the trade, carbon steel piping is the default material choice for oil and gas transmission lines, high-temperature process piping, boiler and heat exchanger service, structural applications, and general engineering. It provides an optimal balance of strength, pressure resistance, machinability, and cost-effectiveness that no other single material category can match at scale. Learn more about carbon steel properties and how they compare with other materials.

The production method determines whether a carbon steel pipe is classified as seamless or welded. Seamless pipes are produced through hot rolling or cold drawing, resulting in a strong, uniform, and pressure-tight tube with no weld seam. Welded pipes including ERW, EFW, LSAW, and SSAW are formed by rolling steel plate or strip into a cylindrical shape and joining the seam by resistance or submerged arc welding, making them a cost-effective choice for a broad range of industrial and structural applications.

For a detailed comparison, see our guide on seamless vs welded pipe for industrial applications.

Types of Carbon Steel Pipes & Tubes

Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe

Seamless carbon steel pipes are manufactured without a weld seam through hot rolling or cold drawing of solid steel billets. The absence of a longitudinal weld makes seamless CS pipe inherently stronger and more pressure-resistant, particularly suited for high-temperature, high-pressure service in oil & gas, power generation, and chemical processing.

ERW Carbon Steel Pipe (Electric Resistance Welded)

ERW carbon steel pipes are produced by rolling steel strip or coil into a cylindrical form and fusing the seam using electric resistance welding. ERW CS pipes offer a cost-effective solution for general piping, water lines, structural applications, and lower-pressure process systems. Available in sizes from 1/2" NB to 24" NB in API 5L Gr.B, X42, X52, X60, and X65.

LSAW Carbon Steel Pipe (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded)

LSAW pipes are formed from steel plates and welded longitudinally using submerged arc welding. Best suited for large-diameter, thick-wall applications in oil and gas transmission, offshore pipelines, and piling. Available in sizes 16" NB to 100" NB, grades API 5L Gr.B to X70 PSL1/PSL2.

SSAW Carbon Steel Pipe (Spiral Submerged Arc Welded)

SSAW (spiral welded) pipes are manufactured by spirally forming steel strip and submerged arc welding both the inner and outer seams. Used for large-diameter water transmission lines, piling, and structural applications where pressure requirements are moderate.

Carbon Steel Tubes

Carbon steel tubes differ from pipes primarily in their application tubes are used for heat transfer, structural, and precision mechanical applications where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. Amardeep Steel supplies CS tubes to ASME/ASTM SA179, SA192, SA210, SA178, SA214, in forms including straight tubes, U-tubes, coil tubes, and finned tubes.

Carbon Steel Pipe Dimensions & Schedule Reference

Carbon steel pipe dimensions are standardised under ASME B36.10M. Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) refers to a nominal bore designation, not the actual outside diameter. Wall thickness is designated by "Schedule" — the higher the schedule number, the thicker the wall. Understanding these dimensions is essential when evaluating carbon steel pipe price per kg, since wall thickness directly affects weight and material cost.

Frequently Asked Questions – Carbon Steel Pipes & Tubes

What is the difference between carbon steel pipe and carbon steel tube?

Carbon steel pipe is identified by nominal pipe size (NPS) and schedule and is mainly used for transporting liquids, gases, and steam. Carbon steel tube is specified by actual outside diameter and wall thickness, making it suitable for applications requiring precise dimensions, such as heat exchangers, boilers, instrumentation, and structural systems.

What is CS pipe?

CS pipe stands for carbon steel pipe. It is manufactured from carbon steel, where carbon is the primary alloying element. Carbon steel pipes are widely used across industries due to their high strength, good weldability, durability, and cost-effective performance.

What are the most common carbon steel pipe grades?

Common carbon steel pipe grades include ASTM A106 Grade B for high-temperature service, ASTM A53 Grade B for general applications, ASTM A333 Grade 6 for low-temperature service, API 5L Grades B, X42, X52, X60, X65, and X70 for pipelines, and ASTM A179/A192 for heat exchanger and boiler tubes.

What is the carbon steel pipe price per kg in India?

Carbon steel pipe prices in India depend on grade, size, wall thickness, and market conditions. As a general estimate, ASTM A106 Grade B pipes range from ₹70–95/kg, API 5L X52 from ₹90–130/kg, and ASTM A333 Grade 6 from ₹95–160/kg. Contact us for the latest project-specific pricing.

What is the difference between API 5L PSL1 and PSL2?

API 5L PSL1 is the standard specification level with basic requirements, while PSL2 includes stricter controls on chemical composition, mechanical properties, impact testing, dimensional tolerances, and non-destructive examination. PSL2 is preferred for critical oil, gas, and offshore applications.
