Stainless Steel Buttweld Elbow Fittings — ASME B16.9 & ASTM A403 Certified

SS Elbow fittings are pipe fittings used to change the direction of fluid flow in a piping system. They are available in two primary angles, 45 degrees and 90 degrees and in two radius types: Long Radius (LR, 1.5D centreline radius) and Short Radius (SR, 1D centreline radius).
Amardeep Steel manufactures buttweld SS elbows per ASTM A403 / ASME SA403 (material) and ASME B16.9 (dimensions for LR) and ASME B16.28 (for SR elbows). Both seamless and welded forms are available across all pipe schedules. For smaller-bore high-pressure piping, also see our SS Socket Weld Fittings available in Class 3000# to 9000#.
The 90° Long Radius elbow is the most commonly specified. It creates a smooth, gradual direction change that minimises turbulence, pressure drop, and erosion — making it ideal for most process piping applications in refineries, chemical plants, and power stations. For diameter transitions in the same pipeline, pair elbows with our SS Concentric & Eccentric Reducer Fittings.
Key Technical Differentiators
- Beveled ends for full-penetration butt weld — strongest possible pipe joint
- Radiographic inspection of the weld possible — required for critical service
- Seamless form available — no weld seam for highest pressure integrity
- All schedules from 5S (thin wall) to XXS (extra-extra heavy)
- Suitable for all temperatures — cryogenic to 1100°C depending on grade
- 180° elbows / returns available for hairpin loops
45° vs 90° SS Elbow Fittings — When to Use Which
The choice of angle depends on your piping layout geometry and flow requirements.
90° — 90 Degree Elbow (LR & SR)
Most widely used. Changes direction by 90 degrees. Available in long radius (ASME B16.9) and short radius (ASME B16.28).
- Turns piping perpendicular — the most common pipeline direction change
- Long Radius (1.5D): lower pressure drop, preferred for process piping
- Short Radius (1D): used where space is limited; higher pressure drop
- Most common grade: SS 316L for process lines; SS 304 for utilities
- Available in sizes ½″ to 48″, all schedules, seamless & welded
📌 Oil & Gas · Chemical · Power · Marine · Pharma
45° — 45 Degree Elbow (LR)
Changes pipeline direction by 45 degrees. Provides a gentler turn with minimal turbulence. Less space required than two 45° bends vs one 90°.
- 45° direction change — less abrupt turn than 90° for sensitive flow media
- Long Radius (LR) is standard — covered under ASME B16.9
- Lower pressure drop compared to 90° elbow in the same system
- Two 45° elbows can replace one 90° for routing flexibility
- Used in slurry, viscous media, and pump discharge lines

Long Radius vs Short Radius Elbow — What Is the Difference?
A Long Radius (LR) elbow has a centreline radius equal to 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter (R = 1.5D). It produces lower pressure drop and reduced turbulence, making it the default choice for process piping, oil & gas, and high-flow systems. A Short Radius (SR) elbow has a centreline radius equal to the nominal diameter (R = 1.0D) and is used where space constraints prevent a long-radius fit.
| Parameter | Long Radius (LR) Elbow | Short Radius (SR) Elbow |
|---|---|---|
| Centreline Radius | 1.5 × Nominal Pipe Diameter (1.5D) | 1 × Nominal Pipe Diameter (1D) |
| Governing Standard | ASME B16.9 | ASME B16.28 |
| Pressure Drop | Lower — smoother flow path | Higher — tighter bend creates turbulence |
| Space Required | More space — larger radius | Less space — compact installations |
| Flow Characteristics | Better — lower turbulence, less erosion | Higher turbulence — avoid for abrasive/corrosive media |
| Preferred Use | Process piping, most general applications | Tight spaces: pump suction, rack piping |
| Availability | All sizes ½″ – 48″, all schedules | ½″ – 24″ standard, larger on request |
| Cost | Standard pricing | Slightly higher due to limited demand |

Grade selection guide: Use SS 304/304L for general-purpose corrosive service. Specify SS 316/316L for chloride-exposed environments (marine, chemical, pharmaceutical) — the 2–3% molybdenum content gives substantially better pitting resistance. Choose SS 321 or 347 for high-temperature cycling above 400°C where sensitisation is a risk. For extremely aggressive seawater, acid service, or FGD systems, SS 904L and Duplex/Super Duplex grades are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions for SS Elbow Fittings
What is the difference between long radius and short radius SS elbows?
Long Radius (LR) elbows have a centreline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter and are covered by ASME B16.9. They allow a smoother flow path with lower turbulence and pressure drop, making them the standard choice for most process piping. Short Radius (SR) elbows have a centreline radius equal to the pipe diameter (1D) per ASME B16.28. They are used where space constraints prevent using LR elbows, but they cause higher pressure drop and more turbulence — avoid SR for abrasive or corrosive media.
What is ASTM A403 and how does it apply to SS elbow fittings?
ASTM A403 (ASME SA403) is the standard specification for wrought austenitic stainless steel piping fittings. It covers grades (WP304, WP316L, WP321, WP347, etc.), chemical composition, mechanical properties (tensile, yield, elongation), heat treatment requirements, and testing procedures. All SS buttweld elbows from Amardeep Steel are manufactured per ASTM A403 and supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate verifying compliance.
Do you supply seamless SS elbows and welded SS elbows both?
Yes. Amardeep Steel supplies both seamless and welded (ERW/SAW) SS buttweld elbows. Seamless elbows are manufactured from seamless pipe or extruded from seamless tube — they have no weld seam and are preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical service applications. Welded elbows are produced from welded plate or pipe and are used for larger diameters where seamless is not economically practical. Both types are certified to ASTM A403.
Which SS elbow grade is best for offshore / marine piping?
For offshore and marine environments with high chloride and saltwater exposure, SS 316L (ASTM A403 WP316L) is the standard specification. Its 2–3% molybdenum content provides significantly better resistance to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion in seawater versus SS 304. For extremely aggressive seawater or process conditions, SS 904L or Duplex 2205 elbows should be considered. Amardeep Steel can supply all of these grades with the required NORSOK M-630 or equivalent certifications.
What is the maximum size SS elbow fitting you can supply?
Amardeep Steel can supply SS buttweld elbows up to 48 inches (DN1200) NPS. For sizes above 24 inches, elbows are typically fabricated (formed from plate). Sizes up to 24 inches are available in seamless or welded pipe-formed construction. Contact us with the specific size, grade, and schedule for stock availability and lead time.
What is the difference between ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43 for SS elbows?
ASME B16.9 covers all wrought butt-welding fittings including carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel, across all standard pipe schedules. MSS SP-43 covers specifically wrought stainless steel butt-welding fittings with lighter wall thicknesses — schedules 5S and 10S — commonly used in corrosion-resistant piping systems where a full-schedule wall is not required.
