What Are Welded Buttweld Pipe Fittings?

Welded buttweld pipe fittings are pipe fittings made of hot rolled stainless steel pipes, carbon steel pipes, alloy steel plates or formed half-shells that are seam welded along their axis. They are employed to join, divert, branch or break off sections of a piping system with a butt weld joint on the fitting end. In comparison to seamless fittings, which are shaped out of a solid billet, welded buttweld fittings are visible as they have a visible seam weld that is inspected with 100 percent X-ray radiography to ensure weld integrity.

According to ASME B16.9, the standard of factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings, the welded fittings shall conform to the same dimensional tolerances and pressure ratings as seamless fittings of the corresponding material grade and wall-thickness. This renders them an inexpensive and efficient option in large bore piping systems, offshore platforms, power plants and chemical processing plants where size ranges exceeding 24 NB are needed.

How Welded Buttweld Fittings Are Manufactured

Welded buttweld fittings are manufactured through one of two primary processes. In the first method, a hot rolled pipe section is cut, heated to the forming temperature, and pressed into the required shape such as an elbow, tee, or reducer on a mandrel die. In the second method, flat steel plates are pressed into half shells or quarter segments, welded along longitudinal seams, and then formed into the final fitting shape. The seam welds are subjected to visual examination and radiographic or ultrasonic testing per applicable ASTM and ASME specifications before the fittings are released for dispatch.

Industries and Applications for Welded Buttweld Fittings

Welded buttweld pipe fittings manufactured to ASME B16.9 are specified across a wide range of heavy industries. The permanent butt weld joint creates a continuous metal path that eliminates potential leak paths at the fitting connection, making these fittings the preferred choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and corrosion-critical service lines. Amardeep Steel Centre regularly supplies welded buttweld fittings to the following industries:

  • Oil and Gas: Upstream flowlines, midstream transmission pipelines, downstream refinery process piping
  • Petrochemical: Reactor feed lines, heat exchanger headers, catalytic cracker piping
  • Power Generation: Boiler feed water lines, steam distribution headers, turbine bypass piping
  • Pharmaceutical: Clean utility systems, sterile piping, WFI (water for injection) distribution loops
  • Chemical Processing: Acid transfer lines, solvent process piping, reactor effluent systems
  • Paper and Pulp: Bleaching plant piping, digester feed lines, pulp transport systems
  • Nuclear: Safety-class process piping, feedwater systems, reactor coolant auxiliary lines
  • Fertilizer: Ammonia synthesis loops, urea plant piping, high-pressure gas lines

Frequently Asked Questions - Welded Buttweld Pipe Fittings

What is the difference between seamless and welded buttweld pipe fittings?

Seamless buttweld fittings are formed from a single piece of solid material without any weld seam, giving them inherently higher pressure resistance. Welded buttweld fittings are fabricated from hot rolled pipes or plates that are joined by seam welding. When 100 percent X-ray inspected, welded buttweld fittings meet the same ASME B16.9 pressure ratings as seamless fittings and are the standard choice for large bore applications above 24 NB where seamless material is not economically available.

Which standard governs welded buttweld pipe fittings?

Welded buttweld pipe fittings are manufactured and inspected per ASME B16.9 (factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings), ASME B16.28 (short radius elbows and returns), and MSS SP-43 for low pressure corrosion-resistant buttwelding fittings. Welding end preparation follows ASME B16.25.

What material grades are available for ASME B16.9 welded buttweld fittings?

Amardeep Steel Centre supplies ASME B16.9 welded buttweld fittings in Stainless Steel (ASTM A403 WP304/316), Carbon Steel (ASTM A234 WPB), Alloy Steel (WP9, WP11, WP22, WP91), Duplex Steel (ASTM A815 S31803, S32205), Super Duplex (S32750), and Nickel Alloys (Inconel, Monel, Hastelloy, Incoloy).

What size range do welded buttweld pipe fittings cover under ASME B16.9?

ASME B16.9 covers factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings in sizes from NPS 1/2 (DN 15) through NPS 48 (DN 1200) in all standard wall thicknesses per ASME B36.10 and ASME B36.19, from Schedule 5S to Schedule XXS.

What documentation is provided with welded buttweld pipe fittings?

Amardeep Steel Centre provides Material Test Reports (MTR) per EN 10204 3.1, dimensional inspection reports, heat treatment certificates, radiography reports for welded fittings, hydrostatic test reports on request, and NACE MR0175 compliance documents for sour service applications.
