What is Stainless Steel 304L?
The stainless steel that is used most in welded components is Stainless Steel 304L. The L in its name signifies the Low Carbon which is its characteristic and most important attribute. A 304L ss pipe is made of the same chemical composition as an ordinary Grade 304 but the amount of carbon is limited to a maximum of 0.03%. This low amount of carbon inhibits a process referred to as sensitization or intergranular corrosion (weld decay). In welding of standard 304, chromium carbides may form at the grain boundaries within the heat affected area, consuming chromium, rendering it prone to corrosion. This is reduced by welding SS 304L Pipes, which can then be welded without posing this risk so that the corrosion resistance of the weld joint is as high as that of the underlying base metal. This causes the SS 304L pipe to be the default pipe in any application that needs welding.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between SS 304 and SS 304L pipe?
SS 304L has a maximum carbon content of 0.03% vs 0.08% for standard 304. The lower carbon prevents sensitisation (intergranular corrosion) in the heat-affected zone during welding. For all welded fabrications, 304L is the default choice.
What does ASTM A312 TP304L mean?
ASTM A312 is the American standard for seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes. TP304L is the type designation for UNS S30403, the low-carbon 304 grade.
What is the maximum operating temperature for SS 304L pipe?
Continuous service up to 870 ° C (1,600 °F). Intermittent service up to 925 ° C. For prolonged high-temperature service, specify SS 304H.
What size range does Amardeep Steel supply for SS 304L pipes?
Seamless: 1/2" to 16" NB. Welded/ERW: 1/2" to 24" NB. EFW: 6" to 100" NB. All standard schedules SCH 5S to XXS.
Is SS 304L pipe suitable for cryogenic service?
Yes. SS 304L retains toughness at -196 deg °C. Used in LNG piping, cryogenic storage, and low-temperature process lines.
Can SS 304L pipes meet NACE MR0175 (sour service)?
Yes, under specific hardness controls per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. Specify when requesting a quote.
What certifications are supplied with SS 304L pipes?
All pipes ship with EN 10204 3.1 MTC. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, DNV, or Lloyds available on request.
How is the price of SS 304L pipe calculated?
Per kg or per piece. Depends on size, schedule, pipe type (seamless vs welded), quantity, surface finish, and certifications. See price table above or contact us for a formal quotation.
